Identifying Compassion Fatigue and Burnout

Compassion Fatigue and Burnout might seem similar but there are important differences. “Compassion fatigue” is the loss of empathy towards our fellow humans. “Burnout” is the loss of purpose or meaning in what we are endeavoring to do in life. It can be a feeling of visceral emptiness, listlessness, or apathy. Before we can challenge these feelings, we need to recognize the signs within ourselves.

Signs of Compassion Fatigue:

Losing one’s temper easily towards others.

Feeling our emotional reservoir is low or empty.

Irritability

Wanting to avoid human contact

Signs of Burnout:

Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much

Taking excessive sick days or vacation days

Feeling deeply apprehensive about or dreading one’s work

These signs and symptoms seriously may also indicate a more serious depressive episode or even the beginning of major depression which can become very debilitating if untreated.
